Beast (2009)
An intense look at the dark side of human nature, what triggers us and makes us at times worse than animals. Dance theatre at its most physically explosive and extreme. Thorpe’s unique movement style and vocabulary leaves audiences physically and mentally drained, described by some as being hit by a freight train at full speed ,this is not work for the faint hearted. This is not however all hot air and noise, his skill, craft and meticulous attention to detail make Thorpe one of the most important new voices in UK dance for the new decade.
Following the huge success of Beast performances, internationally renowned Phoenix Dance Theatre commissioned Douglas to re-make the work on the company, which then toured as part of their UK tour during autumn 2009 to great audience and critical acclaim.
“Introspection is not a charge that could be leveled at Douglas Thorpe’s frightening, threatening Beast. Physical and visceral, Beast is a work that demands the audience sit up and take notice.” Audience member, Resolution 2009
